Cylinder Head: Removal

  1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE in this article. Drain cooling system.
  2. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect necessary electrical connections, fuel lines, coolant hoses, vacuum hoses and control cables from throttle body and intake manifold.
  3. Disconnect electrical connections from distributor. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT in this article. Disconnect oxygen sensor connector.
  4. Disconnect exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold. Remove valve cover. Loosen lock nut and rocker arm adjusting screws to ensure all valves are closed.
  5. Loosen cylinder head bolts evenly in 3 steps to prevent cylinder head warpage. Remove cylinder head bolts, cylinder head and gasket. Remove intake and exhaust manifolds (if necessary).
