Timing Belt: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove lower right engine cover. Remove all accessory drive belts. Remove water pump pulley.
  2. Remove outer bolts retaining crankshaft pulley. Remove crankshaft pulley. DO NOT remove crankshaft pulley center bolt.
  3. Remove timing belt cover and seal. See Figure. Remove tensioner spring and tensioner stud. Loosen but DO NOT remove tensioner bolt. Rotate crankshaft and align timing marks. See Figure.
  4. If reusing timing belt, mark rotation direction. Remove belt tensioner, tensioner plate, tensioner spring, spring damper and timing belt.
    CAUTION: DO NOT rotate crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt is removed or piston damage may result. Note direction of timing belt guide for installation. Concave side of timing belt guide faces oil pump.
  5. Remove retaining bolt, crankshaft sprocket and timing belt guide (located behind crankshaft sprocket) from crankshaft.
  6. If camshaft sprocket is to be removed, remove valve cover. Insert a .39" (9.9 mm) diameter rod in hole of camshaft (located near camshaft sprocket) to hold camshaft. Remove camshaft sprocket.
