Removal (DOHC)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1991 Suzuki Swift, 1991 Suzuki Sidekick, and 1991 Suzuki Samurai. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove negative battery cable. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn crankshaft timing belt sprocket key to horizontal position, 180 degrees away from dipstick guide tube. See Fig 1 .
  2. Remove cylinder head cover. Remove distributor. Remove camshaft sprockets. Install a brass rod under camshaft in groove between lobes to lock camshaft into position. Remove camshaft sprocket bolts. Remove camshaft sprockets.
  3. Remove camshaft bearing cap bolts in reverse order of tightening sequence. See Figure . Loosen bolts in 2 or 3 steps to prevent warpage. Remove camshaft and oil seals. Valve lash adjusters can be lifted out of cylinder head (if necessary).
CAUTION: hydraulic valve lash adjusters cannot be disassembled or repaired. DO NOT  apply force to adjuster body. If removed, keep immersed in container of clean engine oil.
