Removal & Installation: Valves

  1. Remove carbon from valves and inspect for wear, burn or distortion at face and stem. Replace as necessary. Measure thickness of margin on valve head. Intake and exhaust valve margin thickness should measure .039" (1.0 mm). Minimum margin thickness on intake valves is .024" (.60 mm) and .028" (.70 mm) on exhaust valves.
  2. Inspect end face of each valve stem for wear. If necessary, grind end face of valve. If grinding removes .020" (.50 mm) or more, replace valve.
  3. Inspect each valve for radial runout using a dial gauge and "V" block. Rotate valve slowly during inspection. Maximum radial runout is .003" (.08 mm).
  4. Check contact pattern of each valve. Rotate and tap seat with valve head. Pattern produced must be a continuous ring and width must measure .051-.059" (1.30-1.50 mm).
