Piston & Rod Assembly: Removal

  1. Drain engine oil. Remove cylinder head and oil pan from cylinder block. Remove oil pump strainer. Mark pistons, connecting rods and connecting rod caps for proper cylinder identification.
  2. Remove rod caps and install a piece of hose over threads of rod bolts. Remove carbon ridge from top of cylinder. Push piston and connecting rod out through top of cylinder.
  3. Remove rings from piston. Position arrow on piston head facing up. Using an arbor press and Piston Pin Remover/Installer (J-34838), press piston pin from connecting rod and piston.
