Oil Pump: Inspection

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1987 Chevrolet Sprint. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Check oil seal for damage. Inspect outer and inner gears, gear plate and oil pump case for wear or damage. Replace components as necessary.
  2. Using a feeler gauge, measure radial clearance between outer gear and crescent. If clearance exceeds .012" (.31 mm) replace outer gear. Using a straightedge and feeler gauge, measure side clearance. If pump side clearance exceeds .006" (.15 mm), replace oil pump assembly.
