Valve and Valve Spring

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Inspect the valve stem and valve guides.
    1. Using a caliper gauge, measure the inner diameter of the valve guide.

      Valve guide inner diameter (Intake/Exhaust):  5.505 - 5.517 mm (0.2167 - 0.2172 in.)

    2. Using a micrometer, measure the outer diameter of the valve stem.

      Valve stem outer diameter

      Intake: 5.460 - 5.475 mm (0.2150 - 0.2156 in.)

      Exhaust: 5.453 - 5.465 mm (0.2147 - 0.2152 in.)

    3. Calculate the gap between the valve guide and the valve stem by subtracting the difference between the measured value of the valve guide inner diameter and the stem outer diameter.

      Valve stem-to-guide clearance

      [Standard]

      Intake: 0.025 ~ 0.052 mm (0.0010 - 0.0020 in.)

      Exhaust: 0.035 ~ 0.059 mm (0.0013 - 0.0023 in.)

  2. Inspect the valves.
    1. Check the angle of the valve face.
    2. Check the contact surface of the valve for wear. If the valve is excessively worn, replace the valve.
    3. Check the valve margin thickness.

      Valve head thickness (Margin)

      [Standard]

      Intake: 0.80 mm (0.0315 in.)

      Exhaust: 0.95 mm (0.0374 in.)

    4. Check the valve length

      Valve length

      [Standard]

      Intake: 114.15 mm (4.4941 in.)

      Exhaust: 117.33 mm (4.6193 in.)

    5. Check the surface of the valve stem tip for wear. If the valve stem tip is worn, replace the valve.
  3. Inspect the valve seats.
    1. Check the valve seat for evidence of overheating and improper contact with the valve face. If the valve seat is worn, replace cylinder head.
    2. Before reconditioning the seat, check the valve guide for wear. If the valve guide is worn, replace cylinder head.
    3. Recondition the valve seat with a valve seat grinder or cutter. The valve seat contact width should be within specifications and centered on the valve face.
  4. Inspect valve springs.
    1. Using a steel square, measure the out-of-square of the valve spring.
    2. Using a vernier calipers, measure the free length of the valve spring.

      Valve spring

      Intake: 48.88 mm (1.9244 in.)

      Exhaust: 58.02 mm (2.2842 in.)

      Squareness: Less than 1.5°
