WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Inspect the cam lobe height.

Using a micrometer, measure the cam lobe height.

    Cam height

    Intake: 38.5 mm (1.5157 in.)

    Exhaust: 37.6 mm (1.4803 in.)

Inspect the cam lobe surface for abnormal wear and damage. Replace if necessary.

  2. Check the surface of the camshaft journal for wear. If the journal is worn excessively, replace the camshaft.
  3. Inspect the camshaft journal clearance.
    1. Clean the bearing caps and camshaft journals.
    2. Place the camshafts on the cam carrier.
    3. Lay a strip of plastic gauge across each of the camshaft journal.

      NOTE:
      • Be careful not to change the position and direction of LH camshaft front bearing cap and camshaft bearing cap.
      • Do not turn the camshaft.
      • Install the camshaft bearing caps in the sequence shown.

    6. Remove the camshaft bearing caps.
    7. Measure the plastic gauge at its widest point.

      Bearing oil clearance

      [Standard value]

      Intake:

      No. 1: 0.034 - 0.062 mm (0.0013 - 0.0024 in.)

      No. 2, 3, 4: 0.033 - 0.061 mm (0.0013 - 0.0024 in.)

      Exhaust:

      No. 1: 0.034 - 0.062 mm (0.0013 - 0.0024 in.)

      No. 2, 3, 4: 0.033 - 0.061 mm (0.0013 - 0.0024 in.)

If the oil clearance is greater than maximum value, replace the camshaft. If necessary, replace the cam carrier.

    8. Completely remove the plastic gauge.
    9. Remove the camshaft.
  4. Inspect the camshaft end play.
    1. Install the camshaft on the cam carrier.
    2. Install the LH camshaft front bearing cap (A) and camshaft bearing cap (B).

      Tightening torque:

      18.6 - 22.6 N.m (1.9 - 2.3 kgf.m, 13.7 - 16.6 lb-ft)
