Filling And Air Bleeding

  1. Turn off the engine.
  2. Disconnect from the nipple the vent hose (A) that comes from the intake manifold that is located on the top of the engine front timing chain cover.

  3. Make sure that the engine is cool. Then, open the radiator cap and install the coolant refill tank.
  4. Refill a mixture of antifreeze and water (45 - 60 %) into the vehicle using the coolant refill tank.
    NOTE:
    • Slowly inject the coolant so that the air inside can get out easily.
    • Press the upper/lower hoses on the radiator so that the air can get out easily.
    NOTE:
    • Use only genuine antifreeze/coolant.
    • For best corrosion protection, the coolant concentration must be maintained year-round at 55% (except for North America, Europe and China: 45%) minimum.

      Coolant concentrations less than 55% (except for North America, Europe and China: 45%) may not provide sufficient protection against corrosion or freezing.

    • Coolant concentrations greater then 60% will impair cooling efficiency and are not recommended.
    CAUTION:
    • Do not mix different brands of antifreeze/coolants.
    • Do not use additional rust inhibitors or antirust products; they may not be compatible with the coolant.
  5. When the coolant flows out through the disconnected hose, engage the hose securely to the nipple.
  6. Connect the diagnostic device.
  7. Start the engine.
  8. Use the GDS to activate the electric thermostat coolant refill mode.
    NOTE:
    • If the refill mode is not activated early enough, air bleeding may not be performed properly.
    • When the coolant begin to circulate, refill the coolant through the radiator cap.

    * Conditions for Entering the Filling Mode

    • The shift lever is at the P position and the parking brake is applied.
    • The engine is idle.
    • The coolant temperature is 85°C (167°F) or above.
    • The vehicle speed is 0 km/h.
    • The heater is turned off.
    • Perform the work indoors to help raise the coolant temperature.

    * Conditions for Deactivating the Filling Mode

    • The coolant temperature is 90°C (194°F) or above.
    • The filling mode stop option is selected in the diagnostic device.
    • The conditions for entering the filling mode are not satisfied.
    • A filling mode abort condition occurs such as an ECT heater failure or a WTS failure.
    CAUTION:
    • Don't accelerate the engine.

  9. Install the radiator cap and fill the reservoir tank to the "MAX" (or "FULL") line with coolant.
  10. Stop the engine and wait coolant gets cool.
  11. Repeat 7 to 10 until the coolant level doesn't fall any more, bleed air out of the cooling system.
    NOTE:
    • It takes time to bleed out all the air in the cooling system. Refill coolant when coolant gets cool completely, then recheck the coolant level in the reservoir tank for 2 - 3 days after replacing coolant.

    Coolant capacity: 
    Approx. 8.8 L (2.32 U.S.gal., 9.29 U.S.qt., 7.73 lmp.qt.)
