Cleaning and Inspection Procedure - Required

NOTE:

Perform the following cleaning and inspection or overhaul steps, as necessary. ONLY perform steps when components are removed with the intention of reinstallation.

Automatic Transmission Flex Plate

    Clean the automatic transmission flex plate in solvent.

  2. Dry the flex plate with compressed air.
  3. Inspect the flex plate for the following conditions:
    1. Damaged ring gear teeth (1)
    2. Stress cracks around the flex plate-to-crankshaft bolt hole locations (2)
    3. NOTE:

      Do not attempt to repair the welded areas that retain the ring gear to the flex plate. Install a new flex plate.

    4. Welded areas (3) that retain the ring gear onto the flex plate for cracking.

Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing

    NOTE:

    Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant

    Clean the crankshaft rear oil seal housing (2) in solvent. Remove the sealant from the crankshaft rear oil seal housing surface.

  2. Dry the crankshaft rear oil seal housing (2) with compressed air.
  3. Inspect the crankshaft rear oil seal housing gasket sealing surfaces (3) for excessive scratches or gouging.
  4. Inspect the crankshaft rear oil seal housing (2) to the oil pan threaded bolt holes for damaged threads or debris.
  5. Inspect the crankshaft oil seal mounting bore (1) for damage.
