Parallel and Perpendicular Parking Assist Operation
The automatic parking assist system uses 12 B306 Parking Assist Sensors located in the front fascia and rear fascias and functions when the vehicle is moving forward. While moving forward at low speeds, the front-side sensors are used to search for possible parallel parking spots. The system will only detect a parking space if the vehicle is going forward.
To begin searching for a parking spot, the parallel parking assist switch is pressed; to cancel the search, the switch is pressed again. To switch between parallel and perpendicular parking modes during the search process, press and hold the parallel parking assist switch button or, if available, the infotainment system can be used. To switch parking modes. To switch between parking sides (e.g., to look for a parking space on the other side of the lane in a parking lot), the turn signal for the desired side should be activated or, if available, the infotainment system can be used to switch sides.
After the vehicle has passed a sufficiently large spot, an audible beep will occur and the system display will notify the driver when to stop. When instructed, the driver should shift to REVERSE and take their hands off the vibrating steering wheel; then the driver should release the brakes to allow the vehicle to begin parking; a progress arrow displays the status of the parking maneuver. The driver must brake the vehicle at the end of each parking motion and manually change gears when instructed. The driver should also be prepared to accelerate and brake as needed to avoid vehicles, pedestrians or other objects. When changing gears, the driver should allow the automatic steering to complete before continuing the parking maneuver.
When automatic parking is done, the system will inform the driver by displaying a message and beeping, and automatic steering will end; the driver should then shift into PARK. If additional maneuvers are required, the system will display instructions for the driver to follow in the system display.
Any of the following conditions may disable automatic parking assist or cause the system to abort a parking maneuver:
- The driver touches the steering wheel while the system is working
- There is a fault within the system
- The electronic stability control or anti-lock brakes are activated
- An important vehicle message is displayed in the Driver Information Center
- Vehicle speed exceeds 6 miles per hour
