Turbocharger and Components Cleaning and Inspection

Turbocharger and Components Cleaning and Inspection

Callout Component Name

Preliminary Procedure

  1. Remove all components.
  2. Completely inspect the turbocharger and all other engine components that may cause similar conditions before replacing the turbocharger. Refer to Symptoms - Engine Mechanical .
  3. Clean all mating surfaces.
  4. Inspect all threaded holes for damage.
1 Turbocharger Wastegate Regulator Solenoid Valve Hose
2 Turbocharger Wastegate Regulator Solenoid Valve Hose
3 Turbocharger Wastegate Regulator Solenoid Valve Hose
4 Turbocharger Wastegate Regulator Solenoid Valve Bolt
CAUTION:

Refer to Fastener Caution .


Tighten 
8 N.m (71 lb in)
5 Turbocharger Wastegate Regulator Solenoid Valve
6 Turbocharger Wastegate Actuator Arm Retainer
NOTE:

Slight force may be needed to compress the turbocharger wastegate actuator rod spring at the wastegate actuator arm enough to install the actuator arm retainer. Be sure to provide only enough force, as needed, to slide the retainer into the slot. Too much force can result in crushing or deforming the washer.

7 Turbocharger Wastegate Actuator Nut [2x]
Tighten 
10 N.m (89 lb in)
8 Turbocharger Wastegate Actuator
Procedure 
Inspect the wastegate regulator mechanism for functionality.
9 Turbocharger Wastegate Actuator Rod Spring
NOTE:

Ensure the spring washer is installed in the correct orientation, with the widest side facing up. Do not over-compress the wastegate actuator arm against the spring washer when installing the actuator arm retainer.

10 Charge Air Bypass Valve Bolt[3x]
Tighten 
10 N.m (89 lb in)
11 Turbocharger Bypass Valve Solenoid
12 Turbocharger

Procedure

  1. Inspect the compressor and turbine for bent or broken blades and foreign material. PCV fluids and combustion product buildup are common and not a sign of failure.
  2. Inspect the mating surfaces for flatness.
  3. Replace the turbocharger if damage is found.
