Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Apply lubricant to the back of the camshaft position actuators and front of the camshaft bearing cap. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    NOTE:

    Ensure the proper camshaft position actuator is installed in the correct position. Failure to install the proper camshaft position actuator can effect engine performance and set an engine code.

    Lower the exhaust camshaft position actuator (1) into place below the timing chain.

    NOTE:

    The timing mark on the camshaft position actuator needs to be aligned to the corresponding timing mark that was applied to the timing chain prior to removal of the camshaft position actuator.

    Raise the exhaust camshaft position actuator (1) to engage the timing chain (2).

    Adjust the camshaft until the dowel pin (1) aligns with the camshaft slot (2).

    CAUTION:

    Do not pry against the face of the camshaft position actuators or the position actuator retaining bolts as the position actuators will be damaged.

    Position a screwdriver or small pry bar between a camshaft cap and camshaft lobe. Carefully pry the camshaft forward.

  6. Ensure the exhaust camshaft position actuator is seated properly on the end of the camshaft.

    NOTE:

    Install the camshaft position actuator bolt snugly but to not torque at this step.

    Install the NEW exhaust camshaft position actuator bolt (1).

    NOTE:

    Lower the intake camshaft position actuator (1) into place below the timing chain.

    NOTE:

    CAUTION:

  12. Ensure the intake camshaft position actuator is seated properly on the end of the camshaft.

    NOTE:

    Install the camshaft position actuator bolt snugly but to not torque at this step.

    Install the NEW intake camshaft position actuator bolt (1).

    Ensure the marks of the camshaft position actuators (2) are matched to the marks of the camshaft timing chain (1).

    NOTE:

    Counterhold the camshaft with a suitable tool.

    Camshaft Position Actuator Bolt(1) - Tighten [2x]

    Tighten

    1. First pass to 20 N.m (15 lb ft)
    2. Final pass to an additional 90 degrees using the EN-45059  Torque Angle Sensor Kit

    Remove the EN-51367  Camshaft Locking Tool (1).

    Loosen the bolt.(6) [2x]

  18. Loosen the bolt.(1, 4) [2x]
  19. Remove EN-51397-2  Timing Chain Retainer (2).
  20. Remove EN-51397-1  Timing Chain Retainer (5).
  21. Timing Chain Upper Guide - Install - Timing Chain Upper Guide Replacement 
  22. Check the position of the crankshaft, camshaft and camshaft position actuator.

    Turn crankshaft 720 degrees in the direction of engine rotation using the crankshaft balancer bolt (3).

  24. Adjust the engine to cylinder 1 TDC of exhaust stroke. Using the crankshaft balancer bolt (3), rotate the crankshaft in direction of engine rotation until the markings (1, 2) line up.

    Install the EN-51367  Camshaft Locking Tool (1).

  26. If the EN-51367  Camshaft Locking Tool (1) can be installed, the engine timing is properly adjusted.
  27. Remove the EN-51367  Camshaft Locking Tool (1)
  28. NOTE:

    Perform step 19 if the Intake camshaft position actuator was removed.

  30. Camshaft Cover - Install - Camshaft Cover Replacement 
  31. Air Cleaner Assembly - Install - Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
