Circuit/System Description

The engine control module (ECM) and the transmission control module (TCM) monitor powertrain conditions for any condition which may adversely affect vehicle emissions. The ECM and the TCM communicate these conditions through the serial data network. When the ECM or TCM detects the adverse condition, a request is sent to the instrument panel cluster to illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL). Ignition 1 voltage is supplied internally through the instrument panel cluster to the MIL. The instrument panel cluster turns the MIL ON by internally grounding the MIL. The MIL should be on steady with the ignition ON and the engine OFF. The MIL should turn OFF when the engine is started.
