Removal Procedure

  1. Remove Camshaft Cover Camshaft Cover Replacement 
  2. Remove Front Wheelhouse Liner-Right Side Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Right Side (Equinox)Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Right Side (Terrain)

    NOTE:

    Adjust the engine to cylinder 1 top dead center (TDC) of combustion stroke. Turn the crankshaft in direction of engine rotation until the markings (1, 2) line up.

  3. Rotate at the crankshaft balancer bolt (3).

  4. Install the EN-51367  holder (1).
  5. Remove Engine Front Cover - Engine Front Cover Replacement 
  6. Remove Timing Chain Upper Guide - Timing Chain Upper Guide Replacement

  7. The engine has one of the two tensioner designs (1, 2). Each design has a different release mechanism and position.

  8. Fix the timing chain tensioner with design 1 (1) in service position:

    1. Slightly release tension from the piston (2) until bar (1) can be unlocked by rotating the lever (3) in direction of arrow.

    2. Entirely push back the piston (1) until the tensioner lever (2) cannot be locked in this position.

    3. Release tension from the piston (1) until it releases for three ratchets. The three ratchets can be noticed by the click noises.

    4. Apply tension to the piston until the lever (1) is rotated back into the locking position where the bore in the lever aligns with the bore in the tensioner housing.
    5. Fix the lever in this position with a suitable fixing pin (2).

    6. The style of tensioner design 2 (1) can be released by using a punch and pressing on the release clip (2).
    7. Secure the timing chain tensioner with suitable sized drill bit (3).

  9. Remove Timing Chain Tensioner Shoe Bolt (1)
  10. Remove Timing Chain Tensioner Shoe (2)

    NOTE:

    Both tensioner designs have the same removal procedure. Each tensioner design uses a different fixing procedure and fixing tool see steps 7 - 8.7.

  11. Ensure the correct fixation of the tool (3) is used.
  12. Remove Timing Chain Tensioner Bolt (4) - [2x]
  13. Remove Timing Chain Tensioner (1)
  14. Remove and DISCARD the gasket.(2)
