Removal Procedure

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Fuel Pressure Relief
  2. Drain the engine oil. Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement 
  3. Drain the coolant. Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE 47716)Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static)

  4. Disconnect Fuel Feed Hose (1) Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service
  5. Remove Camshaft Timing Chain - Camshaft Timing Chain Replacement 
  6. Remove Intake Manifold - Intake Manifold Replacement

  7. Remove Turbocharger (2) - Turbocharger Replacement 
  8. Remove Fuel Pump - Fuel Pump Replacement
  9. Remove Water Outlet -Water Outlet Replacement (LYX)
  10. Remove Vacuum Pump Assembly - Vacuum Pump Assembly Replacement

  11. Remove Thermostat Bypass Pipe Bolt (1)

  12. Insall the EN-36857  Engine Lift Bracket (2) then install the bolt (1).
    13. NOTE:

    Use a suitable device to support the engine while repositioning the lift hook.

  13. Reposition the engine support fixture hook (3) to the newly installed EN-36857  engine lift bracket (2).

  14. Loosen the cylinder head bolts in sequence shown.

    NOTE:

    Remove any broken bolts using the EN 38188  Cylinder Head Broken Bolt Extractor Kit or equivalent.

  15. Remove and DISCARD the cylinder head bolts (1)

    CAUTION:

    In order to prevent damage to the valves and injectors during cylinder head removal, set the cylinder head on blocks.

  16. Remove the cylinder head (1)
  17. Remove and DISCARD the cylinder head gasket (2)
    18. NOTE:

    A nylon bristle brush should be used to clean the bolt holes. Do not use a tap to clean the cylinder head bolt holes.

  18. Clean the old sealer/lube and dirt from the bolt holes.
  19. Remove any broken cylinder head bolts using the EN 38188  kit or equivalent.
    20. WARNING:

    Wear safety glasses to avoid injury when using compressed air or any cleaning solvent. Bodily injury may occur if fumes are inhaled or if skin is exposed to chemicals.

    NOTE:
    • When cleaning the engine block cylinder head bolt holes use a suitable commercial spray liquid solvent and compressed air from an extended-tip blow gun to reach the bottom of the holes.
    • Use a gasket scraper to clean the cylinder head and block surfaces.
    • Be careful not to gouge or scratch the gasket surfaces. Do not gouge or scrape the combustion chamber surfaces. The feel of the gasket surface is important, not the appearance. There will be indentations from the gasket left in the cylinder head after all of the gasket material is removed. These small indentations will be filled in by the new gasket.
    • Do not use a tap to clean the cylinder head bolt holes.
  20. Clean the mating surfaces at the engine block.
  21. If not replacing the cylinder head, clean and inspect the cylinder head. Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection 
  22. If replacing cylinder head, swap components as needed. Cylinder Head Disassemble 
    1. Remove timing components as needed. Intake and Exhaust Camshaft, Bearing Cap, and Lash Adjuster Removal
