Removal Procedure
- Remove Air Cleaner Assembly - Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
- Remove Camshaft Cover - Camshaft Cover Replacement
- Remove Fuel Pump - Fuel Pump Replacement
- Adjust the engine to cylinder 1 top dead center (TDC) of the combustion stroke. Using the crankshaft balancer bolt (3), rotate the crankshaft in direction of engine rotation until the markings (1, 2) line up.
- Install the EN-51367 Camshaft Locking Tool (1).
- Remove Timing Chain Upper Guide - Timing Chain Upper Guide Replacement
- Mark the camshaft timing chain (1) at the corresponding actuator marks (2).
- Remove EN-51367 Camshaft Locking Tool
- Using a wrench rotate the intake camshaft clockwise, then release. Repeat this three times to relieve oil pressure from the tensioner.
- Loosen Camshaft Position Actuator Bolt (1)@Camshaft Position Actuator - [2x]
- Pre-Install the EN-51397-2 Timing Chain Retainer (2) to the intake side of the camshaft timing chain (3).
- Pre-Install the EN-51397-1 Timing Chain Retainer (5) to the exhaust side of the camshaft timing chain.
- Hand tighten the thumb wheels (1, 4) securely.
- Install a suitable wrench (1) at the exhaust camshaft (2).
- Apply tension to the chain tensioner by rotating the exhaust camshaft counter-clockwise.
- While maintaining tension against the exhaust camshaft, install the EN-51397-1 Timing Chain Retainer(1) to the exhaust side of the camshaft timing chain.
- Tighten bolt (2) of the EN-51397-1 Timing Chain Retainer (1) to 5 N.m (44 lb in).
- Remove the wrench from the exhaust camshaft, and apply to the intake camshaft.
- Apply tension to the chain tensioner by slightly rotating the intake camshaft clockwise.
- While maintaining tension against the intake camshaft, install the EN-51397-2 Timing Chain Retainer (1) to the intake side of the camshaft timing chain.
- Tighten the bolt (2) of the EN-51397-2 Timing Chain Retainer to N.m (lb in).
- If removing the exhaust camshaft position actuator, proceed to step 28.
- Remove and DISCARD the intake camshaft position actuator bolt (1).
- Position a screwdriver or small pry bar between a camshaft cap and camshaft lobe. Carefully pry the camshaft to move as far as possible toward the rear/flywheel end of the engine to help gain clearance for actuator removal.
- Pull the camshaft actuator straight back and off the nose of the camshaft, leaving it in place temporarily with the timing chain.
- Disengage and lower the intake camshaft position actuator (1) from the timing chain (2).
- Remove Camshaft Position Actuator (1)
- Remove and DISCARD the exhaust camshaft position actuator bolt (1).
- Position a screwdriver or small pry bar between a camshaft cap and camshaft lobe. Carefully pry the camshafts to move as far as possible toward the rear/flywheel end of the engine to help gain clearance for actuator removal.
- Pull the camshaft actuator straight back and off the nose of the camshaft, leaving it in place temporarily with the timing chain.
- Disengage and lower the exhaust camshaft position actuator (1) from the timing chain (2)
- Remove Camshaft Position Actuator (1)
Perform step 3 if the Intake camshaft position actuator is being removed.
The actuator marks (2) should be at the 12 O'clock position when cylinder 1 is at top dead center.
Do NOT remove or back out the camshaft position actuator bolt(s). Break them loose from their fully-torqued position. The position actuators must stay firmly attached until the retaining tools are in place, they should be broken loose while the chain is still tight and in position.
The tightening force must be applied gently to the wrench. Using too much force will lead to an overlap of the timing chain that will cause severe engine damages.

Do not pry against the face of the camshaft position actuators or the position actuator retaining bolts as the position actuators will be damaged.
The camshaft timing chain will be held by the EN-51397 Timing Chain Retainers.
