Smoke Test Application

- Ignition OFF, disconnect the E45 Positive Crankcase Ventilation Heater from the air cleaner outlet duct, refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement .
- Remove the air cleaner element, refer to Air Cleaner Element Replacement . Place a disposable plastic bag over the air outlet in the air cleaner housing.
- Connect the GE-41413-A to the GE-41413-311 .
- Wrap a shop towel around the GE-41413-311 to create a seal, and place the GE-41413-311 into the opening for the PCV heater in the air cleaner outlet duct.
- Apply smoke continuously while moving all duct work, pipes, and tubes.
- To improve the visibility of the smoke exiting the engine, illuminate the suspected leak area with the GE-41413-SPT and observe the area from different angles.
- Commanding the intake air flow valve closed with a scan tool can help to increase the volume of smoke within the CAC and induction tubes.
- Verify smoke is not visible exiting the engine, including the components listed below:
- All air induction system hose clamps.
- Air cleaner outlet duct.
- Charge air cooler inlet and outlet hoses.
- Charge air cooler.
- Intake manifold gaskets and seals.
- Mass airflow sensor.
- Positive crankcase ventilation hoses/pipes/tubes.
- Positive crankcase ventilation oil separator.
- If smoke is visible
Repair or replace the affected gasket, seal, clamp or component as necessary and repeat step 5.
- Go to next step: If smoke is not visible
- Refer to Charge Air Cooler Diagnosis (Leak Test) Charge Air Cooler Diagnosis (Smoke Test) and perform the Charge Air Cooler Diagnosis (Induction System Air Leak Test).
