Circuit/System Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2017 Cadillac ATS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The engine control module (ECM) monitors intake air temperature (IAT) sensor 3 signal to calculate the efficiency of the charge air cooler (CAC). The charge air cooler systems' function is to reduce the temperature of the air charge that is heated during the turbocharging process to improve the efficiency and performance of the engine. The intercooler uses conventional coolant that is separate from the engine cooling system.

The IAT sensor 3 is a variable resistor, it is integrated with the B111B Turbocharger Boost/Intake Air Temperature sensor. The sensor is located in the charge air cooler (CAC) housing. It's signal is used by the ECM to measure the temperature of the intake air leaving the CAC. The ECM supplies 5 V to the signal circuit, and a ground for the sensor's low reference circuit. The ECM monitors the IAT sensor 3 signal for excessively high or low voltages.
