Gear Position Sensor Learn

NOTE:

The gear position sensor learn procedure is required after any of the conditions listed below regardless of whether DTC P18CA is set or not:

The ECM must be powered down and go to sleep for at least 2 minutes before the new learned values will take effect.

  • An engine control module (ECM) replacement
  • A gear position sensor replacement
  • A gear position sensor magnet replacement
  • Any repairs which affect the gear position sensor relationship, including internal transmission repairs or full transmission replacement
  1. Ignition ON.
  2. Verify the Power Mode parameter is Run, using a scan tool.
  3. Verify no DTCs are set, except DTC P18CA.
    • If no other DTCs are set 
  4. Perform each step listed below:
    • Set parking brake
    • Block drive wheels
  5. Place the transmission gear shifter in the Neutral 3-4 gate position.
    6. NOTE:

    When starting the learn process a timer in the Engine Control Module is activated. The learn process should be completed within 2 min.

  6. With the scan tool, select Gear Position Sensor Learn, and select Learn.
  7. The scan tool Gear Position Sensor Learn Status parameter should change from Not Learned to Stage 1.
  8. Place the transmission gear shifter in the Neutral 1-2 gate position or the Neutral 5-6 gate position.
  9. The scan tool Gear Position Sensor Learn Status parameter should change from Stage 1 to Stage 2.
  10. Return the transmission gear shifter to the Neutral 3-4 gate position.
  11. The scan tool Gear Position Sensor Learn Status parameter should change from Stage 2 to Stage 3.
  12. The scan tool Gear Position Sensor Learn Status parameter should change from Stage 3 to Complete if the learn was successful. The scan tool Gear Position Sensor Learn Status parameter will display Abort if the process was not successful and the Gear Position Sensor Learn Abort Reason parameter will give the reason.
    • If the gear position sensor learn was not successful 

      Repeat the gear position sensor learn procedure, or refer to DTC P18CA  for further diagnosis.

    • If the gear position sensor learn was successful 
  13. Clear DTCs with a scan tool.
