Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (ATS) .
  2. Remove Two-Piece Propeller Shaft. Refer to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (LTG, LGX, LCV)
  3. {If equipped} Remove Front Axle Propeller Shaft. Refer to Front Axle Propeller Shaft Replacement (LGX, LTG)

  4. Remove the cable retainer bolt (1), then remove the cable retainer.

  5. Disconnect the transmission range selector lever cable terminal (1) from the transmission manual shift lever pin (6).
  6. Slide the retainer (4) forward to release the transmission range selector lever cable (5) from the bracket.

  7. Place an oil drain pan under the transmission fluid cooler pipes (1).
  8. Remove the transmission fluid cooler inlet and outlet pipes (1) from the transmission, and position aside, or remove from the vehicle as necessary.   9. Plug the open fluid ports to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
  10. Remove starter. Refer to Starter Replacement (LGX)
  11. Remove Transmission Converter Cover. Refer to Transmission Converter Cover Replacement (Rear Wheel Drive) Transmission Converter Cover Replacement (All Wheel Drive)

  12. Remove the transmission close out plug (1).
  13. Mark the torque converter to flexplate orientation to ensure proper realignment.

  14. Repeat the following steps for all torque converter bolts (1):
    1. Rotate the harmonic balancer center bolt clockwise ONLY, in order to align the torque converter bolt with the starter opening.
    2. Remove and Discard the torque converter bolt.

  15. Remove the catalytic converter brace bracket (2) from the transmission.
  16. Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.

  17. Remove the lower transmission to engine bolts (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).
  18. Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.
  19. Remove Transmission Support. Refer to Transmission Support Replacement (Automatic RWD)Transmission Support Replacement (Automatic AWD)
  20. Tilt the transmission downward just enough to gain access to the upper transmission fasteners.

  21. Disconnect the transmission vent hose retainers (1).
  22. Disconnect the electrical wiring harness retainers from the transmission to engine fasteners and from the transmission case.

  23. Remove the transmission to engine bolts (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
  24. Pull the transmission straight back.
  25. Install the J-21366  strap onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
  26. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  27. Transfer components as necessary.
  28. Flush and flow test the transmission cooler and transmission pipes. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flow Test and Flushing (8L90)
