Shock Absorber, Shock Absorber Component, or Spring Replacement

Tools Required
* J 42991 - Strut Rod Nut Socket
* J 45400 - Strut Spring Compressor

Removal Procedure





Note: Ensure that the shock absorber assembly is properly seated the spring compressor.

1. Using the J 45400 - compressor , compress the spring.





Notice: Do not allow the absorber rod to rotate during disassembly/reassembly. Use hand tools to keep the absorber rod from rotating. If air tools are used, and the rod is allowed to rotate, damage to the absorber may occur.

2. Using the J 42991 - socket and a wrench to hold the strut rod, loosen the strut shaft nut (1).




3. Lower the strut from the spring assembly.




4. Remove the strut nut (1), washer (2), upper mount and bearing assembly (3), spring (4), and the shock absorber (5).
5. Replace any parts that are found to be excessively worn or damaged.

Installation Procedure





Note: Ensure that the spring is properly seated in the spring compressor.

1. Position the spring (1) in the J 45400 - compressor.
2. Using the J 45400 - compressor , compress the spring enough to install shock and the other components.





Note: Ensure that the spring is properly seated in the mount and the shock absorber.

3. Install the shock absorber (5), upper mount and bearing assembly (3), washer (2), and the nut (1).

Notice: Do not allow the absorber rod to rotate during disassembly/reassembly. Use hand tools to keep the absorber rod from rotating. If air tools are used, and the rod is allowed to rotate, damage to the absorber may occur.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

4. Using the J 42991 - socket and the proper size wrench to hold the strut rod, tighten the strut nut to 20 Nm (15 lb ft).
5. Remove the strut assembly from the J 45400 - Strut Spring Compressor.
