Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Apply a 2-3 mm (0.79-0.118 in) wide by 0.5-1.5 mm (0.02-0.06 in) bead of sealant GM P/N 97720043 (Canadian P/N 88901148), or equivalent to the upper oil pan mating surfaces.

  2. Apply a 2-3 mm (0.79-0.118 in) wide by 0.5-1.5 mm (0.02-0.06 in) bead of sealant GM P/N 97720043 (Canadian P/N 88901148), or equivalent to the flywheel housing sealing surface.
  3. Install the upper oil pan to the engine block. Ensure the oil level indicator tube is installed into the upper oil pan.

  4. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice .

  5. Install any brackets and the upper oil pan bolts in the sequence shown.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolts to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).

  6. Install the two flywheel housing to upper oil pan bolts.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

  7. Install the battery cable bracket bolts.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolts to 12 N.m (106 lb in).

  8. Install the battery cable bracket nut.

    Tighten:  Tighten the nut to 8 N.m (71 lb in).

  9. Install the engine flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement (Automatic Transmission)  or Engine Flywheel Replacement (Manual Transmission) .
  10. Install the lower oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement - Lower .
  11. If vehicle is a 4WD, install the front differential carrier. Refer to Differential Carrier Assembly Replacement .
  12. If vehicle is a 2WD, Connect the relay rod to the pitman arm and idler arm. Refer to Relay Rod Replacement .
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Install the oil level indicator tube bolt to the indicator tube bracket.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolt to 21 N.m (15 lb ft).

  15. Install the oil level indicator.
  16. Fill the engine with oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
