Removal Procedure

- Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System (w/RPO HP2) or Draining and Filling Cooling System (w/o RPO HP2) in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
- Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
- Remove the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor clip from the bracket.
- Remove the ECT sensor from the cylinder head.
- Remove the indicator tube bolt.
- Remove the indicator tube bracket.
- Remove the O-ring seal from the indicator tube.
- Remove the heater inlet and outlet hoses from the hose bracket.
- Remove the heater hose bracket bolts and bracket from the cylinder head.
- Remove the water crossover. Refer to Coolant Crossover Pipe Replacement (8.1L) in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right (4.3L Engine) or Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right (4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L Engines) or Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right (6.6L (LLY) Engine) or Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right (8.1L Engine) in Engine Exhaust.
- Remove and discard the cylinder head bolts (1, 2, and 3).
- Remove the cylinder head.
- Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.
- Clean and inspect the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection .
IMPORTANT:
Place the cylinder head on two wood block to prevent damage to the sealing surface.
