Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (w/Single Battery) or Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (w/Auxiliary Battery) or Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (w/Dual Batteries) .
  2. Remove the right wheelhouse panel. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Right Side (Chevrolet) or Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Right Side (GMC) .
  3. Remove the starter motor bolts. Reposition the starter aside. The wiring to the starter does not require removal.
  4. Fig 2: Locking Flywheel Using J 44643

  5. Install J 44643  in order to hold the flywheel. See Special Tools .
  6. Remove the lower fan shroud. Refer to Engine Coolant Fan Lower Shroud Replacement (Mechanical) .

  8. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  9. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
  10. If required, clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Cleaning and Inspection .
