Flat spot on the pinion or the ring gear teeth Replace the pinion and the ring gear. Refer to Differential Carrier Assembly Disassemble (8.25 Inch Axle Lock Tab Style)  or Differential Carrier Assembly Disassemble (9.25 Inch Axle)  or Differential Carrier Assembly Disassemble (8.25 Inch Axle Lock Ring Style) .
Flat spot on the pinion bearing Replace the bearing. Refer to Differential Carrier Assembly Disassemble (8.25 Inch Axle Lock Tab Style)  or Differential Carrier Assembly Disassemble (9.25 Inch Axle)  or Differential Carrier Assembly Disassemble (8.25 Inch Axle Lock Ring Style) .
Worn pinion splines Replace the pinion. Refer to Differential Carrier Assembly Disassemble (8.25 Inch Axle Lock Tab Style)  or Differential Carrier Assembly Disassemble (9.25 Inch Axle)  or Differential Carrier Assembly Disassemble (8.25 Inch Axle Lock Ring Style) .
