Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the transmission from the vehicle. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
  2. Install J 21366  to restrain the torque converter.
  3. Install J 44723  . Refer to Holding Fixture Installation .
  4. Position the transmission vertically with the torque converter end up.
  5. Remove J 21366  torque converter retaining bracket.

    IMPORTANT: The distance from the torque converter mounting lugs to the transmission mounting face is an important measurement. It is required to check correct reassembly of the torque converter.
  7. Measure from the mounting lugs to the transmission mounting face.
  8. Install J 46409  180 degrees apart into 2 lugs on the front of the torque converter. See Special Tools .
  9. CAUTION: Avoid personal injury or property damage when removing or installing the torque converter by seeking an assistant to help lift the torque converter.
  10. Lift the torque converter free of the transmission and place it on the work table.
  11. Remove the lifting handles.
