Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Savana Special, 2003 GMC Savana Camper Special, 2003 GMC Savana, 2003 Chevrolet RV Cutaway, and 2003 Chevrolet Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.
  1. Install the J-42640 in the steering column lower access hole.
  2. Remove the lower intermediate shaft. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement - Lower .

  3. Remove the power steering reservoir (3) mounting nuts (4). Position power steering reservoir out of the way.

  4. Remove the cruise control module (3) mounting nuts (2). Position cruise control module out of the way.

  5. Remove the intermediate shaft seal to the cowl mounting screws.

  6. Pull the intermediate shaft seal down and remove the upper intermediate shaft to intermediate shaft bearing retaining bolt.

  7. Remove the intermediate shaft bearing bracket retaining nuts.
  8. Remove the intermediate shaft lower brace retaining nut.
  9. Remove the intermediate shaft bearing from the studs on the cowl and disconnect the intermediate shaft bearing from the upper intermediate shaft.
  10. Remove the intermediate shaft bearing.
  11. Remove the intermediate shaft seal.
