Park Brake Cable: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Savana Special, 2003 GMC Savana Camper Special, 2003 GMC Savana, 2003 Chevrolet RV Cutaway, and 2003 Chevrolet Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the cable. Snap the retainer tabs into the frame bracket. Connect the front cable to the intermediate cable.
  2. Route the cable in through the floor pan and engage the grommet. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle.
  3. Install the cable anchor to the stud on the floor. Install the anchor nut and tighten to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. Roll the carpet into place. Install the park brake pedal. See PARK BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY  . Adjust the park brake system. See PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  in PARK BRAKE SYSTEM under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS.


  1. Install the intermediate cable to the vehicle.
  2. For passenger and cargo vehicles, connect the intermediate park brake cable to the front and rear park brake cables.
  3. For cutaway vehicles, connect the intermediate cable to the front and rear park brake cables, passing it through the cable guide.
  4. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle. Enable the park brake cable automatic adjuster. See PARK BRAKE CABLE AUTOMATIC ADJUSTER  .
  5. Adjust the park brake system. See PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  in PARK BRAKE SYSTEM under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS.


  1. Install the cable to the vehicle. Install the park brake cable to the lever. Perform the following procedure to install the cable to the backing plate:
    • Compress the spring by pushing toward the lever.
    • Route the cable through the slot in the backing plate.
    • Push the cable housing into the backing plate until the locking tabs snap into place.
  2. Pass the cable through the cable guides on the frame. For cutaway vehicles only, install the cable to the mounting bracket until the locking tabs snap into place. Connect cable at the equalizer.
  3. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle.
  4. Enable the park brake cable automatic adjuster. See PARK BRAKE CABLE AUTOMATIC ADJUSTER  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS. Adjust the park brake cable. See PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  in PARK BRAKE SYSTEM under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS.


  1. Install the cable to the vehicle. Install the park brake cable to the lever. Perform the following procedure to install the cable to the backing plate:
    • Compress the spring by pushing toward the lever.
    • Route the cable through the slot in the backing plate.
    • Push the cable housing into the backing plate until the locking tabs snap into place.
  2. Install the bolt retaining the cable to the lower shock mount and tighten to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  3. Install the cable to the differential clip. Connect the rear axle vent hose clip to the cable (1500 Series). Pass the cable through the cable guide.
  4. For cutaway vehicles, install the cable to the mounting bracket until the locking tabs snap into place.
  5. For cargo and passenger vehicles, install the cable to the rear crossmember until the locking tabs snap into place.
  6. Connect the cable to the equalizer. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle. Enable the park brake cable automatic adjuster.
