Transmission End Play Measurement

Special Tools
- J 24446 Rear Bearing Installer. See Special Tools .
- J 5959 Dial Indicator Set. See Special Tools .
- Using J 24446 (1), install the ball bearing (2) until the bearing seats. See Special Tools .
- Align the retaining ring (1) so that the beveled edge is facing up.
- Install the retaining ring (1).
- Position the transmission case so that the front is facing up.
- Assemble the following tools and install them onto the torque converter housing as shown.
- J 5959-3 extension (1)
- J 5959-1 dial indicator (2)
- J 5959-2 base (3)
- J 5959-7 clamp (4)
- Zero the dial indicator (2).
- Lift the rear of the 1-2-3-4, 4-5-6 clutch housing with a screwdriver through the power take-off (PTO) hole in the transmission case.
- Note the end play measured on the dial indicator.
Specification: The transmission end play must be 0.279-1.549 mm (0.011-0.061 in).
- If the end play is not within the specification, a different selective spacer must be installed.
- Remove the special tools from the transmission.
- Remove the retaining ring and the ball bearing assembly.
- Repeat the measurement and calculation to determine the correct selective spacer.
IMPORTANT:
DO NOT pry on the turbine tone wheel when measuring the end play through the power take off access hole.
