Four-Wheel-Drive Output Shaft Retaining Nut Installation

Special Tools 

J 43769:  Spanner Nut Wrench - 4WD

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .

  1. The fullest clockwise position of the manual shift shaft is Park (P), which engages the park pawl.
  2. Using a wrench on the manual shift shaft flats (1), rotate the shaft to the fullest clockwise position.

  4. Ensure the park pawl is engaged.
  5. Install the J 43769:  wrench (1) onto the output shaft retaining nut, 4WD (2).
  6. CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution .
  7. Using the J 43769:  wrench (1), install a new output shaft retaining nut, 4WD (2) onto the output shaft (3). Tighten the nut to 61 N.m (45 lb ft).

    NOTE: The Neutral (N) position of the manual shift shaft is 2 detent positions counterclockwise from the fullest clockwise position.
  9. Using a wrench on the manual shift shaft flats (1), rotate the shaft to the fullest clockwise position.
  10. Rotate the manual shift shaft counterclockwise 2 detent positions.
  11. Make sure the park pawl is disengaged.
