Circuit/System Testing

When removing connectors inspect for damage, corrosion or poor connection. Damage or corrosion to the following requires repair or replacement of the affected component/connector:
The connector and connector position assurance (CPA) may seat independent of each other. Both the connector and CPA should seat with an audible and/or tactile click. The CPA isolates the shorting-bars within the connector allowing the deployment circuit to operate properly.
- Driver steering wheel air bag
- Driver steering wheel coil
- SDM module
- Driver steering wheel air bag wiring harness connector
- Driver steering wheel coil wiring harness connector
- SDM wiring harness connector
The connector and connector position assurance (CPA) may seat independent of each other. Both the connector and CPA should seat with an audible and/or tactile click. The CPA isolates the shorting-bars within the connector allowing the deployment circuit to operate properly.
- Verify that the driver steering wheel air bag connector and CPA are engaged.
- If the above condition is not found, make the appropriate repair.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the driver steering wheel air bag.
- With the appropriate load tool adaptor, connect J 38715-A in place of the driver steering wheel air bag. See Special Tools .
- Ignition ON, with a scan tool, verify the appropriate DTC is set as current.
- If the DTC is not set or is set as history, cycle ignition OFF, disconnect the adapter and J 38715-A , reconnect the harness connector at the driver steering wheel air bag, and cycle the ignition ON. See Special Tools . If the DTC resets after reconnecting the air bag, then replace the driver steering wheel air bag.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect J 38715-A and the adaptor. See Special Tools .
- Disconnect the driver steering wheel air bag coil in-line connector.
- With the appropriate load tool adaptor, connect special tool J 38715-A . See Special Tools .
- Ignition ON, with a scan tool, verify DTC is set as current.
- If DTC is not set or is set as history, replace the driver steering wheel air bag coil.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect special tool J 38715-A and the adaptor. See Special Tools .
- Disconnect the harness connector at the SDM.
- Ignition ON, test for less than 1 volt between the high circuit terminals listed below and ground.
- Driver steering wheel air bag coil connector Stage 1 terminal A1 X275
- Driver steering wheel air bag coil connector Stage 2 terminal B1 X275
- If greater than the specified range, test the circuit for a short to voltage.
- Test for less than 1 volt between the low circuit terminals listed below and ground.
- Driver steering wheel air bag coil connector Stage 1 terminal A2 X275
- Driver steering wheel air bag coil connector Stage 2 terminal B2 X275
- If greater than the specified range, test the circuit for a short to voltage.
- Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between the high circuit terminals listed below and ground.
- Driver steering wheel air bag coil connector Stage 1 terminal A1 X275
- Driver steering wheel air bag coil connector Stage 2 terminal B1 X275
- If less than the specified value, test the circuit for a short to ground.
- Test for infinite resistance between the low circuit terminals listed below and ground.
- Driver steering wheel air bag coil connector Stage 1 terminal A2 275
- Driver steering wheel air bag coil connector Stage 2 terminal B2 X275
- If less than the specified value, test the circuit for a short to ground.
- Test for less then 1 ohm between the SDM connector and the air bag connector high circuit terminals listed below.
- Driver steering wheel air bag coil connector Stage 1 terminal A1 X275 and SDM terminal 4 X1.
- Driver steering wheel air bag coil connector Stage 2 terminal B1 X275 and SDM terminal 1 X1.
- If greater than the specified range, test the circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Test for less then 1 ohm between the SDM connector and the air bag connector low circuit terminals listed below.
- Driver steering wheel air bag coil connector Stage 1 terminal A2 X275 and SDM terminal 3 X1
- Driver steering wheel air bag coil connector Stage 2 terminal B2 X275 and SDM terminal 2 X1
- If greater than the specified range, test the circuit for an open/high resistance.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the SDM.
