Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Savana Special, 2003 GMC Savana Camper Special, 2003 GMC Savana, 2003 Chevrolet RV Cutaway, and 2003 Chevrolet Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim .
  2. Remove the oil level indicator. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  3. Remove the coolant air bleed pipe. Refer to COOLANT AIR BLEED PIPE ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT (4.8L, 5.3L, AND 6.0L ENGINES) .
  4. Remove the right exhaust manifold. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - RIGHT (4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L) or EXHAUST MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT-RIGHT (4.3L) .
  5. Remove the pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

    Important:  The cylinder head bolts are NOT reusable.

  6. Remove the cylinder head bolts.
    CAUTION: After removal, place the cylinder head on two wood blocks to prevent damage.
  7. Remove the cylinder head.

  8. Remove the cylinder head gasket.
  9. Discard the gasket.
  10. Discard the cylinder head bolts.
  11. Clean and inspect the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection .
