Removal Procedure

Position the transmission case so that the front of the transmission case is facing up.

CAUTION: Refer to 3-5 Reverse Clutch Backing Plate Rivet Damage Caution .

Install J 24204-2: assembly (1) and J 44530: compressor (2) into the transmission case. Make sure that J 44530: compressor does not touch the gear thrust plate rivets (3) on the 3rd, 5th, and reverse clutch backing plate assembly.
Compress the piston return spring assemblies (5) until a gap is visible below the retaining ring (4).
Remove the retaining ring (4).
Remove J 24204-2: assembly and J 44530: compressor from the transmission case.

Remove the 3rd, 5th, and reverse clutch backing plate assembly (1).

Remove four 3rd, 5th, and reverse clutch fiber plates (1) and three 3rd, 5th, and reverse clutch steel plates (2).
Remove, as a unit, 3rd, 5th, and reverse spring plate (4) and 3 piston return spring assemblies (3).

NOTE: The piston return spring assemblies snap off.

Remove 3 piston return spring assemblies (1) from the 3rd, 5th, and reverse spring plate (2).
