Input Shaft Seal Replacement

Callout Component Name
NOTE: Do not damage the sealing surfaces of the transfer cases or the shafts when prying the seals for removal. Damaging the sealing surface may cause leakage or require replacement of the damaged component.
Preliminary Procedures: Remove the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement .
1 Transfer Case Nuts
Tip:  Use transfer case nuts to secure transfer case to assembly fixture J 45759  .
Special Tools: 
J 45759  Assembly Fixture
2 Transfer Case
Tip:  Insert the transfer case and assembly fixture into the bench holding fixture J 3289-20  and secure with pivot pin.
Special Tools: 
J 3289-20  Holding Fixture
3 Transfer Case Input Shaft Seal
Tip: 
  • Double lip input shaft oil seals are used on applications with a WET adapter cavity.
  • Single lip input shaft oil seals are used on applications with a DRY adapter cavity.

Procedure

  1. Remove the seal using an appropriate tool. Refer to Transfer Case Disassemble 
  2. Install the seal using J 42738  .

J 42738  Seal Installer
