Drum Brake Hardware Inspection

Fig 1: Identifying Brake Shoe Hold Down Springs

Visually inspect the hold down springs and cups (1) for the following conditions:
- Binding spring coils
- Broken spring coils
- Missing springs
- Missing spring cups
- Bent hold down spring pins
- Broken hold down spring pins
- Excessive corrosion

Visually inspect the lower brake shoe spring (1) for the following conditions:
- Excessive bending or breakage
- Excessive corrosion
- Loss of spring tension
- Missing

Visually inspect the upper return spring (1) for the following conditions:
- Excessive bending or breakage
- Excessive corrosion
- Loss of spring tension
- Missing
If any of the listed conditions were evident, the affected part or parts require replacement.
