Circuit/System Testing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Cadillac CTS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate camshaft position (CMP) actuator solenoid.
  2. IMPORTANT: The test lamp is used to load the circuit and may not illuminate.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the ignition circuit terminal 1 and the negative terminal of the battery.
  4. Ignition ON, test for less than 0.1 volt between the ignition circuit terminal 1 and the positive battery terminal.
    • If greater than 0.1 volt, repair the ignition voltage circuit for an open/high resistance.
  5. IMPORTANT: Use the J 35616-200  Test Lamp Kit for this test. See Special Tools . If the J 35616-200  is not available, use a test lamp that measures greater than 20 ohms. See Special Tools .
  6. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 2 and B+.
  7. Command the appropriate CMP actuator solenoid ON with a scan tool.
  8. IMPORTANT: The voltage must be measured at the control side of the circuit.
  9. Test for less than 1 volt between the probe of the test lamp and the ECM housing.
    • If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM.
  10. Remove the CMP actuator solenoid. Inspect the CMP actuator solenoid and mounting area for the following conditions:
    • For a torn, restricted, mis-positioned, or missing screens at the CMP actuator solenoid
    • For engine oil leaks between the oil sealing lands of the CMP actuator solenoid-Inspect the lands of the CMP actuator solenoid for nicks.
    • For oil seepage at the CMP actuator solenoid connector
    • If a condition is found, replace CMP actuator solenoid.
  11. Ignition OFF, swap the suspected CMP actuator solenoid with a CMP actuator solenoid that is operating correctly.
  12. Engine idling, command the suspected camshaft actuator from 0 degrees to 40 degrees and back to zero while observing the appropriate scan tool CMP Angle Variance parameters. The CMP Angle Variance should be less than 2 degrees in each of the commanded states.
    • If the CMP Angle Variance is greater than 2 degrees, replace the camshaft position (CMP) actuator.
  13. If all circuits/connections test normal, test or replace the CMP actuator solenoid.
