Circuit/System Testing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Cadillac CTS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
IMPORTANT: Refer to SIR Service Precautions . When removing connectors inspect for damage or corrosion. Damage or corrosion in the following requires repair or replacement of the affected component/connector.
  • The pretensioner
  • The inflatable restraint module
  • The SDM module
  • The inflatable restraint module wiring harness connector
  • The SDM wiring harness connector
  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate inflatable restraint module.
  2. With the appropriate adaptor, connect J 38715-A  in place of the inflatable restraint module. See Special Tools .
  3. Ignition ON, verify the DTC is set as current.
    • If DTC is not set or is set as history, replace the appropriate inflatable restraint module.
  4. Ignition OFF, disconnect J 38715-A  and the adaptor. See Special Tools . Disconnect the harness connector at the SDM.
  5. Ignition ON, test for less than 1 volt between the appropriate high control circuit terminal and ground.
    • I/P module Stage 1 terminal B (X1)
    • I/P module Stage 2 terminal B (X2)
    • Left roof rail module terminal B
    • Right roof rail module terminal B
    • Left side impact module terminal B
    • Right side impact module terminal B
    • Left seat belt pretensioner terminal 2
    • Right seat belt pretensioner terminal 2
    • If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage.
  6. Test for less than 1 volt between the appropriate low control circuit terminal and ground.
    • I/P module Stage 1 terminal A (X1)
    • I/P module Stage 2 terminal A (X2)
    • Left roof rail module terminal A
    • Right roof rail module terminal A
    • Left side impact module terminal A
    • Right side impact module terminal A
    • Left seat belt pretensioner terminal 1
    • Right seat belt pretensioner terminal 1
    • If greater than the specified range, test the circuit control for a short to voltage.
  7. Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between the appropriate high control circuit terminal and ground.
    • I/P module Stage 1 terminal B (X1)
    • I/P module Stage 2 terminal B (X2)
    • Left roof rail module terminal B
    • Right roof rail module terminal B
    • Left side impact module terminal B
    • Right side impact module terminal B
    • Left seat belt pretensioner terminal 2
    • Right seat belt pretensioner terminal 2
    • If not the specified value, test the control circuit for a short to ground.
  8. Test for infinite resistance between the appropriate low control circuit terminal and ground.
    • I/P module Stage 1 terminal A (X1)
    • I/P module Stage 2 terminal A (X2)
    • Left roof rail module terminal A
    • Right roof rail module terminal A
    • Left side impact module terminal A
    • Right side impact module terminal A
    • Left seat belt pretensioner terminal 1
    • Right seat belt pretensioner terminal 1
    • If not the specified value, test the control circuit for a short to ground.
  9. Test for less than 1 ohm between the following high control circuit terminals.
    • I/P module Stage 1 terminal B (X1) and SDM terminal 10
    • I/P module Stage 2 terminal B (X2) and SDM terminal 6
    • Left roof rail module terminal B and SDM terminal 21
    • Right roof rail module terminal B and SDM terminal 22
    • Left side impact module terminal B and SDM terminal 13
    • Right side impact module terminal B and SDM terminal 14
    • Left seat belt pretensioner terminal 2 and SDM terminal 25
    • Right seat belt pretensioner terminal 2 and SDM terminal 26
    • If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance.
  10. Test for less than 1 ohm between the following low control circuit terminals.
    • I/P module Stage 1 terminal A (X1) and SDM terminal 11
    • I/P module Stage 2 terminal A (X2) and SDM terminal 7
    • Left roof rail module terminal A and SDM terminal 20
    • Right roof rail module terminal A and SDM terminal 23
    • Left side impact module terminal A and SDM terminal 12
    • Right side impact module terminal A and SDM terminal 15
    • Left seat belt pretensioner terminal 1 and SDM terminal 24
    • Right seat belt pretensioner terminal 1 and SDM terminal 27
    • If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance.
  11. If all circuits test normal, replace the SDM.
