Two/Four Wheel Drive Shift Components Cleaning and Inspection

Preliminary Procedure

  • Inspect all components or sub-components and perform any repair procedure necessary to fix the damage. If the damage cannot be repaired, replace the component or sub-component as indicated.
  • Clean all components in cleaning solvent and air dry.
1 Transfer Case Two/Four Wheel Drive Synchronizer Insert
Tip:  Inspect the inserts for wear.
2 Transfer Case Two/Four Wheel Drive Synchronizer Hub Engagement Teeth
Tip:  Inspect the engagement teeth for wear.
3 Transfer Case Two/Four Wheel Drive Synchronizer Hub Splines
Tip:  Inspect the splines for loose fit on the rear output shaft.
4 Transfer Case Two/Four Wheel Drive Synchronizer Assembly
Tip:  Inspect the synchronizer for wear or chipped teeth.
5 Transfer Case Two/Four Wheel Drive Synchronizer Blocking Ring - Outer
Tip:  Inspect the synchronizer ring for wear, damage, or missing material.
6 Transfer Case Two/Four Wheel Drive Synchronizer Blocking Ring - Inner
Tip:  Inspect the synchronizer ring for wear or roughness.
7 Transfer Case Two/Four Wheel Drive Synchronizer Sleeve Engagement Teeth
Tip:  Inspect the engagement teeth for wear.
8 Transfer Case Two/Four Wheel Drive Synchronizer Sleeve Collar
Tip:  Inspect the collar for wear.
9 Transfer Case Two/Four Wheel Drive Shift Fork Inserts
Tip:  Inspect the inserts for wear.
10 Transfer Case Shift Fork Spring
Tip:  Inspect the spring for breakage.
11 Transfer Case Two/Four Wheel Drive Shift Fork Assembly
Tip:  Inspect for cracks, broken areas, or other damage. The component must be replaced if damage is found.
12 Transfer Case Two/Four Wheel Drive Shift Fork Pin
Tip:  Replace the shift fork if the pin is worn.
13 Transfer Case Two/Four Wheel Drive Shift Fork Bore
Tip:  Replace the shift fork if the bore is worn.
14 Transfer Case Shift Detent Plunger Cam Lobes
Tip:  Inspect the cam lobes for wear or roughness. The component must be replaced if damage is found. Refer to High/Low Shift Fork Replacement .
15 Transfer Case Two/Four Wheel Drive Mode Cam Lobes
Tip:  Inspect the cam lobes for wear or roughness. The component must be replaced if damage is found. Refer to High/Low Shift Fork Replacement .
