Removal & Installation

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
  2. Remove driver-side air bag module. See DUAL-STAGE DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  . Remove steering wheel lock bolt. Using puller, remove steering wheel. Remove left front scuff plate and side trim. Release tab and remove hood release lever from lower panel. Remove screw and lower panel. Remove steering column covers. Remove clockspring retaining screws. See Fig 1 . Disconnect clockspring electrical connector and remove clockspring.
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Center clockspring after installing onto steering column. See CLOCKSPRING CENTERING  under ADJUSTMENTS. Maintain clockspring centered position. Tighten steering wheel lock bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Ensure air bag system is functioning properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  .
