Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Savana Special, 2003 GMC Savana Camper Special, 2003 GMC Savana, 2003 Chevrolet RV Cutaway, and 2003 Chevrolet Cutaway. WARNING: When performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Failure to observe the correct procedure could cause deployment of the SIR components, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.
  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to ZONE 3 .

    Important:  The abrasion sleeve located on the steering column wire harness assembly must be reinstalled. Make note of what connector, in the ignition lock cylinder case, is coming out of the middle of the abrasion sleeve for installation purposes.

  2. Remove the steering column tilt head components. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing Replacement (Tilt) .
  3. Remove the ignition switch. Refer to Ignition Switch Replacement .
  4. Remove the 3 pan head tapping screws (1) from the ignition lock cylinder case (2).

    Important:  The lock bolt assembly (4) is under slight spring tension from the lock bolt spring (3). Hold the lock bolt (4) in place while removing the ignition lock cylinder case (2).

  5. Remove the ignition lock cylinder case (2) and the lock bolt assembly (4) from the steering column tilt head assembly (5).
  6. Remove the lock bolt spring (3) from the lock bolt assembly (4).
