Piston, Connecting Rod, and Bearing Removal

Special Tools

J 24270: Ridge Reamer

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .

Rotate the crankshaft to place the piston at the bottom of the piston stroke.
Place a cloth on top of the piston.
Use the J 24270: reamer to remove the ridge at the top of the cylinder bore.
Remove cloth.
Remove cutting debris from the cylinder and piston.

NOTE: The connecting rods and rod bearing caps are NOT interchangeable. Using a paint stick or etching tool, place match marks or numbers on the connecting rods and the connecting rod bearing caps prior to removal to ensure that they are assembled in their original position and direction, with the connecting rod/rod bearing cap mating surfaces properly oriented and aligned.

Remove the connecting rod cap bolts. Set the bolts aside for use in plastic gauging if needed. New bolts will be used for final assembly.
Remove the connecting rod cap.
Remove the bearing insert from connecting rod.

Push piston assembly out of cylinder.
Reassemble the connecting rod bearing, cap, and bolts upon removal.
