Upper Control Arm Replacement (RWD): Installation

  1. Install the upper control arm to the frame. Line up the holes in the shaft with the holes in the frame.
    NOTE: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE in Cautions and Notices.

    Important:  Mount the shims exactly as they were when removed.

  2. Install the upper control arm shims, the mounting bolts and the mounting nuts. Lift the upper control in order to gain access.

    Tighten 

    1. 2.1. Tighten the upper control arm mounting nut on the thinner shim pack first.
    2. 2.2. Tighten the upper control arm mounting nuts to 110 N.m (81 lb ft).
  3. Connect the upper ball joint to the steering knuckle. Make sure the ball joint is fully seated into the steering knuckle.
  4. Install the upper control arm retaining nut.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the upper control arm retaining nut to 83 N.m (61 lb ft).

  5. Install a new cotter pin. Tighten the nut up to an additional 1/6 amount in order to insert the cotter pin through the upper ball joint stud. Bend the cotter pin ends flat against the nut.

  6. Install the wheel speed sensor harness bracket retaining nut and bolt.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the wheel sensor harness bracket retaining nut to 16 N.m (12 lb ft).

  7. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION in Tires and Wheels.
  8. Remove the safety stand from the lower control arm.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Check the front wheel alignment. Refer to MEASURING WHEEL ALIGNMENT in Suspension General Diagnosis.
