Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System (without HP2) in Engine Cooling.
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  3. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement - Lower .
  4. Remove the left exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Left (4.3L Engine) in Engine Exhaust.
  5. Remove the left side pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  6. Remove the junction block bracket bolt.

  8. Position the bracket and wiring harness aside.
  9. Loosen the power steering (P/S) pump rear bracket nut.
  10. Remove the P/S pump rear bracket front nut.
  11. Remove the bolts and nut for the P/S pump bracket.
  12. Leave the air conditioning (A/C) compressor, if equipped, and the P/S pump on the bracket.
  13. Slide the P/S pump bracket off of the stud and set aside.

  15. Remove the P/S pump bracket stud.

  17. Remove the harness ground bolt.
  18. Position the harness ground (4) and ground strap (5).

  20. Remove the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor.

  22. Remove the spark plugs.

  24. Remove the spark plug wire support bolts and support.

  26. Remove the cylinder head bolts.

  28. Remove the cylinder head.

  30. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.

  32. Remove the cylinder head locator pins, if necessary.

  34. Clean and inspect the cylinder head, if necessary. Refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection .
  35. Disassemble the cylinder head, if necessary. Refer to Cylinder Head Disassemble .
