Removal Procedure
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2004 GMC Sierra, 2004 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, 2004 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado, and 2003 GMC Sierra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Release the park brake.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
- Relieve the tension from the park brake cables from the equalizer by pulling down on the intermediate cable and release the rear cables from the equalizer bar.
- Remove the rear park brake cable from the park brake actuator lever.
- For vehicles without RPO NYS, remove the park brake cable from the mounting bracket by depressing the locking tabs.
- For vehicles with RPO NYS, remove the rear park brake bracket bolt.
- Remove the rotor. Refer to Brake Rotor Replacement - Rear (Except Dual Wheels or NYS) , Brake Rotor Replacement - Rear (W/Dual Wheels) or Brake Rotor Replacement - Rear (W/NYS) in Disc Brakes.
- Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (8.6 Inch, 9.5 Inch Axles) or Rear Axle Shaft Replacement (9.75 Inch Axle) in Rear Drive Axle.
- Remove the park brake shoe. Refer to Park Brake Shoe Replacement (Except RPO NYS, 1500HD, 25/35 Series) , Park Brake Shoe Replacement (RPO NYS) or Park Brake Shoe Replacement (1500HD/25/35 Series) .
- Remove the backing plate bolts.
- Remove the park brake actuator lever housing from the backing plate.
