Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table:

  1. 5:  Tests for a short to ground, a high resistance, or an open in the seat belt tension retractor sensor signal circuit.
  2. 6:  Tests for a short to ground, a high resistance, or an open in the seat belt tension retractor sensor 5-volt reference circuit.
  3. 7:  Tests for a short to ground, a high resistance, or an open in the seat belt tension retractor sensor low reference circuit.
  4. 8:  Tests for a short to voltage in the seat belt tension retractor sensor signal circuit.
  5. 9:  Tests the seat belt tension retractor sensor signal circuit input voltage range.
  6. 10:  Tests for a short to voltage in the seat belt tension retractor sensor 5-volt reference circuit.
  7. 11:  Tests for a short to voltage in the seat belt tension retractor sensor low reference circuit.

1 Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - SIR? - Go to Step 2  Go to Diagnostic System Check - SIR

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the seat belt tension retractor sensor connector.
  3. Inspect the seat belt tension retractor sensor terminals and harness connector for damage or corrosion.
Does the seat belt tension retractor sensor terminals or harness connector exhibit any signs of damage or corrosion?
- Go to Step 3  Go to Step 4

  1. If the seat belt tension retractor sensor terminals are damaged, replace the seat belt tension retractor sensor. Refer to Seat Belt Retractor Replacement - Right Front .
  2. If the seat belt tension retractor sensor harness connector is damaged, replace the connector. Refer to Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you complete the replacement?
- Go to Step 15  -

  1. Disconnect the PPS module connector.
  2. Inspect the PPS module connector for corrosion or damage. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 15  Go to Step 5 
Test the seat belt tension retractor sensor signal circuit for a short to ground, a high resistance, or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

- Go to Step 15  Go to Step 6 
Test the seat belt tension retractor sensor 5 volt reference circuit for a short to ground, a high resistance, or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 15  Go to Step 7 
Test the seat belt tension retractor sensor low reference circuit for a short to ground, a high resistance, or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 15  Go to Step 8 
  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Test the seat belt tension retractor sensor signal circuit for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 15  Go to Step 9 
Test the seat belt tension retractor sensor signal circuit input voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Does the voltage measure within the specified range ?
0.05-4.5 V Go to Step 10  Go to Step 12 
10  Test the seat belt tension retractor sensor 5-volt reference circuit for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 15  Go to Step 11 
11  Test the seat belt tension retractor sensor low reference circuit for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 15  Go to Step 12 
12 Replace the seat belt tension retractor sensor. Refer to Seat Belt Retractor Replacement - Right Front .
Did you complete the replacement?
- Go to Step 13  -

  1. Reconnect all SIR and PPS system components.
  2. Verify that all components, connectors, and CPAs are properly mounted.
  3. Use the scan tool in order to clear the SIR and PPS DTCs.
  4. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC as specified in the supporting text.
Does the DTC reset?
- Go to Step 14  System OK

IMPORTANT: The PPS is a calibrated system. The PPS must be rezeroed after replacement.
Replace the PPS. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Passenger Presence System Replacement - Front .Did you complete the replacement?
- Go to Step 15  -

  1. Reconnect all SIR and PPS system components.
  2. Verify that all components, connectors and CPAs are properly mounted.
  3. Use the scan tool in order to clear the SIR and PPS DTCs.
  4. Rezero the PPS. Refer to Passenger Presence System Rezeroing Procedure .
  5. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC as specified in the supporting text.
Does the DTC reset?
- Go to Step 2  System OK
