Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 GMC Sonoma and 2003 Chevrolet S10 Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Important:  If installing a new camshaft, change the engine oil and the oil filter.

Important:  If you install a new camshaft, replace all of the valve lifters.

  1. Install the camshaft.
  2. Coat the camshaft lobes, journals, and oil pump drive gear with engine assembly prelube GM P/N 1052367 (Canadian P/N992869) or equivalent.
  3. Handle the camshaft carefully in order to prevent damage to the camshaft bearings.

    NOTE: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE in Cautions and Notices.
  4. Install the thrust plate bolts.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the thrust plate bolts to 12 N.m (106 lb in).

  5. Install the camshaft position sensor. Refer to CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR in Removal & Installation in Engine Performance.
  6. Install the crankshaft sprocket and camshaft timing chain. Refer to TIMING CHAIN AND SPROCKETS REPLACEMENT  .
  7. Install the oil pump drive. Refer to OIL PUMP DRIVE REPLACEMENT  .
  8. Install the engine front cover. Refer to ENGINE FRONT COVER REPLACEMENT  .
  9. Install the valve lifters. Refer to VALVE LIFTER REPLACEMENT  .

  10. Install the cylinder head. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD REPLACEMENT  .
  11. Install the air conditioning condenser, if equipped. Refer to CONDENSER REPLACEMENT in Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  12. Install the radiator. Refer to RADIATOR REPLACEMENT (2.2L) in Engine Cooling.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE in Battery.
