Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Yukon XL, 2003 GMC Yukon, 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Support the control arm with a safety stand.

  4. Disconnect the Electronic Suspension Control (ESC) link rod from the sensor, if equipped. Refer to FRONT POSITION SENSOR LINK ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT - ELECTRONIC SUSPENSION in Electronic Suspension Control under REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS .
  5. Unload the torsion bars. Refer to TORSION BAR REPLACEMENT  .
  6. Remove the wheel hub and bearing assembly. Refer to WHEEL HUB, BEARING, AND SEAL REPLACEMENT (RWD)  or WHEEL HUB, BEARING, AND SEAL REPLACEMENT (4WD)  .
  7. Remove the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle. Refer to TIE ROD REPLACEMENT in Steering Linkage (Non- Rack and Pinion) under REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS .
  8. Remove the brake hose bracket retaining bolt from the steering knuckle.

  9. Remove the upper control arm retaining nut and separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle using the J 43631  and J 45851  .

  10. Remove the lower ball joint retaining nut. Separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle using the J 43631  and J 45851  .

  11. Remove the steering knuckle.
