Installation Procedure
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Yukon XL, 2003 GMC Yukon, 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Place the rear axle assembly under the vehicle.
- Align the rear axle assembly with the springs.
- Connect the spacers, the spring plates and the U-bolts to the rear axle.
- Raise the rear axle assembly into position.NOTE: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE in Cautions and Notices.
- Install the washers if equipped and the nuts to the U-bolts.
Tighten:
- 15 series tighten the nuts in a criss-cross pattern to 72 N.m (53 lb ft).
- 25 series tighten the nuts in a criss-cross pattern to 150 N.m (110 lb ft).
- Install the vent hose to the rear axle vent fitting. Refer to VENT HOSE REPLACEMENT .
- Connect the shock absorbers to the rear axle. Refer to SHOCK ABSORBER REPLACEMENT (15 SERIES) or SHOCK ABSORBER REPLACEMENT (25 SERIES) in Rear Suspension.
- Install the brake calipers. Refer to BRAKE CALIPER in Disc Brakes.
- Install the brake lines and the brake line bracket bolts to the axle.
- Connect the parking brake cable. Refer to REMOVAL (LEFT REAR -- WITHOUT 4-WHEEL STEERING) or REMOVAL (LEFT REAR -- WITH 4-WHEEL STEERING) and REMOVAL (RIGHT REAR -- WITHOUT 4-WHEEL STEERING) or REMOVAL (RIGHT REAR -- WITH 4-WHEEL STEERING) in Park Brake.
- Install the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION in Tires and Wheels.
- Connect the propeller shaft. Refer to WHEEL SPEED SENSOR REPLACEMENT -- REAR in Propeller Shaft.
- Fill the axle with lubricant. Use the proper fluid.
- Remove the utility stands.
- Lower the vehicle.
