Diagnostic Procedures

- Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Inspect the AIR maxifuse. Is the fuse open? If yes, go to step 13. If no, go to next step.
- Inspect the ignition 1 fuse. Is the fuse open? If yes, go to step 29. If no, go to next step.
- Install the scan tool. Start the engine and allow the engine to run for 2 minutes. Verify the engine is running at normal operating temperature and is in Closed Loop. Command the AIR pump ON with a scan tool. Does the short term FT indicate a change of more than 20% within 30 seconds? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 6.
- The DTC is intermittent. Are any additional DTCs stored? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Command the AIR pump relay ON with a scan tool. Does the AIR pump turn ON? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 9.
- Command the AIR pump relay OFF with a scan tool. Does the AIR pump turn OFF? If yes, go to step 16. If no, go to next step.
- Turn OFF the ignition. Remove the AIR pump relay. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Does the AIR pump turn ON? If yes, go to step 34. If no, go to next step.
- Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the AIR pump relay. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Probe the AIR pump relay battery positive supply terminal at the relay connector with a test lamp connected to ground. Is the test lamp illuminated? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 31.
- Jumper the battery positive terminal to the AIR pump feed circuit at the relay harnesses connector using a fused jumper. Does the AIR pump run? If yes, go to step 22. If no, go to next step.
- Leave the jumper installed. Disconnect the AIR pump electrical connector. Probe terminal "A" of the AIR pump electrical connector with a test lamp connected to ground. Does the lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 33.
- Leave the jumper installed. Connect a test lamp from terminal "A" to terminal "B" of the AIR pump harness connector. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 37. If no, go to step 39.
- Turn OFF the ignition. Remove the AIR relay. Remove the AIR maxifuse. Probe the battery feed terminal at the AIR pump relay harness connector with a test lamp connected to battery positive. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 32. If no, go to next step.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the AIR pump and the AIR solenoid. Probe the AIR pump/AIR solenoid feed circuit at the AIR pump relay harness connector with a test lamp connected to battery positive. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 35. If no, go to next step.
- Reinstall the following components/electrical connector:
- A new AIR maxifuse
- The AIR pump relay
- The AIR pump solenoid
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Command the AIR pump relay ON with a scan tool. Does the AIR maxifuse open? If yes, go to step 45. If no, go to step 30.
- Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the AIR solenoid harness connector. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Probe the terminal for the solenoid battery positive voltage circuit at the AIR solenoid harness connector with a test lamp connected to a ground. Command the AIR pump relay ON with a scan tool. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 33.
- Connect a test lamp between terminal "A" and terminal "B" of the AIR solenoid valve harness connector. Command the AIR pump relay ON with a scan tool. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 37.
- Disconnect the vacuum harness from the AIR solenoid. Connect a vacuum gage to the vacuum source hose. Start the engine. Is the reading on the gage more than 2 in. Hg? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 38.
- Reconnect only the vacuum supply hose to the AIR solenoid. Connect a vacuum gage to the other port of the AIR solenoid. Command the AIR pump relay ON with a scan tool with the engine running. Is the reading on the gauge more than 12 in. Hg? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 45.
- Reconnect the vacuum hose to the AIR solenoid. Disconnect the AIR shut-off valve inlet hose at the AIR shut-off valve. Start the engine. Command the AIR pump relay ON with a scan tool. Is air flow present at the AIR shut-off valve inlet hose? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 37.
- Reconnect the AIR inlet hose to the AIR shut-off valve. Disconnect the AIR shut off valve output hose at the AIR shut-off valve. Start the engine. Command ON the AIR pump with the scan tool. Does air flow from the AIR shut-off valve? If yes, go to step 28. If no, go to step 40.
- Turn ON the ignition. Probe the ignition 1 voltage circuit terminal at the AIR pump relay with a test lamp connected to a good ground. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 31.
- Probe the air pump relay control circuit at the relay terminal with a test lamp connected to battery positive. Command the AIR pump relay ON with a scan tool. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 25.
- Probe the air pump relay control circuit at the relay terminal with a test lamp connected to battery positive. Command the AIR pump relay OFF with a scan tool. Does the test lamp turn OFF? If yes, go to step 36. If no, go to step 27.
- Disconnect the connectors from the PCM. Probe the control circuit at the relay connector with a test lamp connected to a good ground. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 42. If no, go to next step.
- Remove the AIR pump relay. Measure the resistance of the AIR pump relay control circuit between the AIR relay and the control module connector with a Digital Multimeter (DMM) for an open. Is the reading 0-5 ohms? If yes, go to step 46. If no, go to step 41.
- Disconnect the PCM connectors. Test the air pump relay control circuit between the control module and the AIR pump relay for a short to ground. Did you find a problem? If yes, go to step 43. If no, go to step 46.
- Check for leaks or restrictions in the following components:
- Hoses
- Check valves
- Fittings
- AIR pipes
- Exhaust manifolds
Did you find a problem? If yes, go to step 44. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Turn ON the ignition. Probe the ignition 1 voltage circuit terminal at the AIR pump relay connector with a test lamp connected to battery positive. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step 32. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Reconnect the AIR pump. With a scan tool, command the AIR pump ON. Does the AIR maxifuse open? If yes, go to step 37. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Repair the open in the circuit between the fuse and the relay. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair the short to ground in the circuit between the fuse and the relay. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step 48. If no, go to step 35.
- Repair the open in the circuit between the relay and the AIR pump/solenoid. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair the short to voltage in the circuit between the relay and the AIR pump/solenoid. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair the short to ground between the AIR relay and the AIR pump/solenoid. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Replace the AIR pump relay. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Replace the AIR pump. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair the leak or restriction in the vacuum hose. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair the open in the AIR pump ground circuit. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Replace the AIR shut-off valve. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair the open in the AIR relay control circuit between the relay and the PCM. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair the short to voltage in the AIR relay control circuit between the relay and the PCM. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair the short to ground in the AIR relay control circuit between the relay and the PCM. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair the air delivery system as necessary. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Replace the AIR pump solenoid. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Check the PCM connections. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step 48. If no, go to next step.
- Replace the PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
- Install the scan tool. Start the engine and allow it to run for 2 minutes. Verify the engine is running at normal operating temperature and is in Closed Loop. Command ON the AIR pump with the scan tool. Does the short term FT indicate a change of more than 20% within 30 seconds? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 6.
- Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running DTC. Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 6.
- Observe the stored information, Capture Info with a scan tool. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
